African Mahogany
The Eighteenth hardest wood in the Timber tones range with a Janka hardness rating of 830 lbf. African Mahogany is a light brown hardwood with shimmering patterns. The wood is obtained from the Khaya Nyasica tree found mainly in Tropical Africa and can grow up to 100 ft high. Our African Mahogany plectrums are manufactured from off cuts from musical instrument and flooring manufacturing. Interesting Facts: African Mahogany is pruned during the dry season to feed cattle and the bark is used to treat many diseases. In the 70s some drum companies used this timber to make drum shells. Traditionally mahogany has been used to make the back s and sides of guitars and Ukeleles. African Mahogany has very warm tones however due to its relative softness it is only recommended for use on Nylon strung Guitars.

Cocobolo
The sixteenth hardest wood in the Timber tones range with a Janka hardness rating of 1140 lbf. Cocobolo is a beautiful exotic tone-wood with red / orange and brown patterns. The wood is obtained from the Dalbergia Retusa tree found mainly in Central America and can grow up to 70 ft high. Our Cocobolo plectrums are manufactured from off cuts from musical instrument manufacturing. Interesting Facts: Cocobolo is used wherever aesthetic beauty or tone are important. Commonly used for gun grips, knife handles, cue sticks and musical instruments. Guitar manufacturers such as Alembic, Ibanez and Dean Guitars have all released high end guitars using Cocobolo, however more recently Cocobolo has been used for backs and sides of high end Acoustic guitars. Cocobolo has very nice warm tones. It should add some depth to most Acoustic Guitars emphasising the lower and mid range frequencies. Cocobolo is the softest timber that we recommend for Acoustic Guitar. Although it adds some beautiful warm tones it must be noted that this comes with a trade off of a shorter than usual life.

Zebrawood
The tenth hardest wood in the Timber tones range with a Janka hardness rating of 2160 lbf. Zebrawood is a highly patterned timber with streaks of gold and brown and as such is commonly used for veneer, wall panelling, custom furniture, gun stocks and of course high end acoustic and electric guitars. In the past it was also used in Cadillac and Mercedes-Benz cars. The wood is obtained from the Microberlinia brazzavillensis tree found mainly in Camaroon and Gabon (western Africa) and can grow up to 120 ft high with a trunk diamter of 3 - 4ft. Our Zebrawood plectrums are manufactured from off cuts from musical instrument manufacturing. Interesting Facts: Zebrawood is also known as Zebrano and is considered a threatened species. There are some large efforts being made currently to re-plant this species to reduce the severity of the threat. Zebrawood is a mid hardness timber and as such should not have a dramatic brightening or mellowing affect on an acoustic guitar. If the frequency of your guitar suits your ear then Bocote would be a good choice to improve the overall tone without impacting the pitch.

Bubinga
The eleventh hardest wood in the Timber tones range with a Janka hardness rating of 1980 lbf. Bubinga is a very commonly used tonewood, common on not only Bass, Electric and Acoustic Guitars but also used extensively on Harps and Drum Kits. The wood is obtained from the Guibourtia demeusei tree found mainly in tropical regions of Africa and South America and can grow up to 160 ft high with a trunk diamter of 3 - 6ft. Our Bubinga plectrums are manufactured from off cuts from musical instrument manufacturing. Interesting Facts: Bubinga is often used to manufacture Archery bows. Lexus cars still use Bubinga in their luxury models. Bubinga is well known for its mellow rounded tones on an acoustic guitar. If the frequency of your guitar is slightly too bright for your ear then Bubinga may add some mid and lower tones on most guitars.
